The short answer

Claude that does the work, not just the talking.

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's AI agent for everyday office work. Regular Claude is a chat window: you paste things in, it talks back. Cowork works in your actual files. Point it at a folder and it can read the documents inside, draft the report you asked for, clean up the spreadsheet, or organize the mess, step by step, like a careful new colleague.

It is included on every paid Claude plan, so if your organization already pays for Claude, you already own it. Claude Team runs about $25 per seat and includes Claude, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork together. See our full pricing breakdown for the details.

The catch is not the tool, it is the rollout. Cowork touches your real data, so the teams that get value fast are the ones that decide up front which files it may use, set simple rules, and train people on two or three real workflows. That takes about two weeks done right. It is also exactly what we do for teams in DC and Raleigh.

What it actually does

Six jobs Claude Cowork does for real teams

Not demos. These are the workflows small organizations run with it every week.

Drafts from your real files

Point it at a folder and ask for a board report, a proposal, or a summary. It reads the actual spreadsheets and documents, then writes the draft.

Organizes messy documents

Hundreds of files with inconsistent names? Cowork can sort, rename, and file them by rules you give in plain language.

Finishes multi-step jobs

Not one answer, a whole task: gather the inputs, build the thing, check the result. It plans the steps and works through them.

Works with spreadsheets

Combine exports, clean up columns, and turn raw data into a readable summary without hand-copying between tabs.

Learns your repeatable tasks

Save a task you do weekly as a Skill: the same report, the same format, the same checks, done the same way every time.

Keeps a human in charge

It proposes a plan before it works, shows what it changed, and your team reviews before anything goes out the door.

Chat vs. agent

What's the difference between Cowork and a chatbot?

A chatbot gives you an answer. An agent finishes a task. Ask a chatbot for a board report and you get an outline to fill in. Ask Cowork, with access to your program notes and budget spreadsheet, and you get a drafted report built from your real numbers, saved as a file, with a note about what it was unsure about.

Cowork shows its plan before it starts, works through the steps, and shows what it changed when it is done. Your team stays the editor and the decision-maker. The model is simple: AI proposes, humans confirm.

Questions

Claude Cowork, answered plainly

What is Claude Cowork in one sentence?
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's AI agent for everyday office work: it runs on your computer, works in your real files and folders, and completes multi-step tasks like drafting a report from a folder of documents, while you review the results.
Is Claude Cowork free?
No, but it does not cost extra either. Claude Cowork is included on every paid Claude plan, from individual plans up through Claude Team (about $25 per seat, which also includes Claude and Claude Code) and Claude Enterprise. If you already pay for Claude, you already have Cowork.
How is Claude Cowork different from regular Claude chat?
Chat answers questions; Cowork does tasks. In chat you paste things in and copy answers out. Cowork works directly in your files: it can read a folder of documents, create and edit files, and carry a job through several steps on its own, showing you the plan first and the changes after.
Do I need to be technical to use it?
No. Cowork is built for people who live in documents and spreadsheets, not code. You describe the task in plain language. The setup that does take care, choosing what data it can touch, setting team rules, and training people on good habits, is exactly the part a consultant or IT partner handles.
Is our data safe with Claude Cowork?
On Claude Team and Enterprise plans your data is not used to train models by default. Enterprise adds single sign-on, audit logs, custom roles, and a HIPAA option with a signed BAA. The bigger risk is process, not the tool: teams need simple rules for what data Cowork may touch. That one-page policy is part of any good rollout.
What does a professional Claude Cowork setup cost?
Wellforce implements Claude and Claude Cowork for teams of 5 to 25 from $2,500 flat ($3,500 for law firms, which need extra controls), including plan selection, setup, two or three connected tools, a starter Skills library, two training sessions, and an AI use policy. Most teams are live in two weeks.
