Answering the Automation Question

The digital transformation had touched nearly every aspect of our lives.  The way we consume entertainment and communicate has changed dramatically over the last two decades.  How we perform our jobs is no different.  With remarkable advances in technology at the forefront, we have seen improvements in collaboration, efficiency, and productivity in many different industries that have presented opportunities for organizations of all sizes to remain competitive through the turbulence and chaos of rapid change.  However, it is still all too common to see exponential growth in the need for technology resources but much less gradual growth in IT budgets and staffing, leading to a fundamental problem: the need for additional resources exists, but how to adopt, deploy, and manage them?  Obviously, this differs for every industry but exists to some extent no matter where you look. 

Short of a wholesale shift in thinking about budgets, IT teams need to utilize the vast array of tools available to simplify and streamline operations.  Enter IT automation.  We say that, but what is automation?  Automation refers to the tools and practices used to automate repetitive jobs, processes, and workflows.  Think of large batch processes that need to be completed daily, large data transfers, or error-prone data entry tasks. Automation allows you to turn old, outdated processes and tedious tasks into secure automatic workflows, and they can be applied nearly everywhere, from individual tasks to the seamless integration of large-scale systems.  The key is to take the time to analyze processes and workflows to identify areas where automation can be deployed:

The benefits can be seen across an organization.  Human Resources can streamline the hiring process by utilizing tools that will quickly read through applications, searching for keywords to identify preferred candidates that can potentially save days or even weeks of work.  Once hired, being able to streamline the onboarding process for a new employee by eliminating much of the manual entry tasks and eliminate human error are excellent utilizations.

Hybrid work teams can benefit from not only data collaboration but the ability to quickly and easily schedule meetings and touchpoints without the hassle of manually identifying availability and location.
